SANJA CHULAKOVSKA
CONTEMPORARY ABSTRACT ARTIST & CONSERVATOR-RESTORER

Sanja Chulakovska is a contemporary abstract artist and conservator-restorer whose practice is shaped by a lifelong relationship with art, cultural heritage, and the emotional language of color. Born in Skopje, North Macedonia, into a family of artists, she developed an early understanding of painting not simply as an image, but as a way of experiencing and interpreting the world.

Formally trained in Fine Arts, Chulakovska built a distinguished professional career spanning nearly two decades at the Museum of the City of Skopje, where she worked as a conservator-restorer on icons, frescoes, easel paintings, and works of cultural heritage. This experience profoundly influenced the way she approaches contemporary painting—through an acute sensitivity to material, surface, time, and transformation.

Her current abstract practice explores the space between control and spontaneity, presence and absence, matter and light. Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, she builds atmospheric compositions through fluid layers, transparent passages, decisive gestures, and moments of intense color. Her paintings resist literal interpretation, inviting the viewer instead into an emotional and perceptual experience.

For Chulakovska, abstraction is not an escape from reality, but a way of moving beneath its surface. Her work is driven by the belief that painting does not need to provide answers; it can create space for questions, memory, tension, silence, and personal interpretation.

Now based in Sarasota, Florida, Chulakovska continues to develop her contemporary practice while exhibiting her work in the United States and internationally.
